Interview Tips For A Big Career Jump

Looking to make a big jump up in your career, when interviewing remember these tips.

  • Confidence... confidence...confidence - In our transparent world it's harder than ever to pretend to be something you aren't, so the old adage of "fake it to you to make it" is a little dated. However, if you are confident and real with your positioning to the situation, you can overcome objections about your experience. Example: You are right I do not have X experience, however here are the things I do have that are comparable and give me the skills you are looking for. So, no, not an exact match but a lot of the components you are looking for.

  • Don't make your insecurities their concerns - Recently I asked a candidate about a college degree. It was a yes or no question that took up the next 5 minutes of the call (me listening) to why that should not be an issue. Less than 5% of my clients care if you have a degree and for this particular candidate the roles they qualified for 0% cared. This was education, but could be years of experience, number of reports, titles, anything.

  • Read the job description's list of qualifications - Just know that most roles are not filled by candidates that check every item off that list. Prepare your objection handling for the ones you fall short on. Keep your responses short and to the point. The longer you talk, the less I believe that you believe what you are saying.

  • Research the role's comp - Many times job postings will have the comp listed on the job description, however I recommend knowing what the market is so when you explain your comp expectations you are able to justify what you are asking for. This will help you get to the top of a range or possibly have it moved up if they are below market value.

  • Ask them what about your profile/resume made them interested in interviewing you - This allows you to understand their lens on your experience.
